*** English translation below ***

English translation provided by @Dgeler, many thanks !

You would like to make your own boxes, but you don’t know where to start ?
Everybody is able to make his own boxes, it’s easy and economic !
To give you an idea, it should cost you less than 3€ the box (with the price in France).

There are four main steps to build your boxes :
1) Determine how and with what you will print them
2) Cut the outline of your boxes
3) Plough the grooves to facilitate folding and avoid the craquelures
4) Paste the strips to close the boxes neatly
5 & 6) Those steps are optional but may get the rendering better ;)

We synthesized the essentials questions you may ask, adding to them some notions important to understand and to start with the best conditions.
Find back the links to the complete tutorials at the end of the page (not translated yet).

1) How and with what print the boxes ?

Many of you ask themselves how to print the boxes.
There are only two ways to do it : either to print by yourself, or to print by a professional.
We are going to see the advantages and disadvantages of each method.

Print by a professional with digital printing

Printing at home isn’t the cheapest solution. Among the purchasing of the paper and the ink cartridge, a box may amount you as expensive if not more than a professional printing.
Don’t be scared to ask a printer next to you, with your files on a USB key.
According to him and the number of boxes you would like to print, the price may be on a sliding scale, think about it.
Careful, your printer may ask you to put your boxes in a single .pdf file which will make the printing easier.

Image

Image

Advantages:
- Excellent compromise, the rendering is better and it feel more resistant.
- Better stiffness, neater grooves.
Disadvantages:
- The inside of the box would by white (but you can paste your printing on a mottled grey carton, see at the bottom).
Choosing your printer and your paper:
- the hardest would be to find a good printer near you, who would be able to print your files. Him found and approved, you won’t be able to go without him !
Search professionals in « Printing and digital printing » around you on Google or any other websites that can.
- Your printer must be able to print your boxes with digital colors, A3 size and on 300 g/m2 thick paper.
- You don’ t need to choose thicker, or you’ll risk to crack the paper while folding.
- Note that the more you print, the cheaper unit price will be. For example, I print around twenty boxes for 57€ (2,7€ the box).

Print by a professional with digital colors on thin self-adhesive paper, then sticking it on grey carton

Having a white inside annoy you ?
No problem, there is a solution for that too !
Rather than printing your boxes on a 300 g/m2 thick paper, print it on a thin self-adhesive paper, then stick it on a grey carton.
This way you’ll have a more true and a more rigid box.

Image

Image

Advantages:
- Perfect stiffness
- The inside of the box will be grey and so, closer to the original.

Disadvantages:
- Longer and more meticulous making because it needs additional steps.

Choosing your paper:
- Find out about you printer if he can offer you this kind of paper, A3 size.
- For the carton, you’ll have to choose « mottled grey» - Pas sûr de la traduction - carton to have the most true box’s inside.
- You’ll find this kind of carton in specialized shop.
- Wether it’s the inside or the outside of the box, think about showing to the professional (or the seller) an original box so that he recommends you the best he can to offer you the closest paper to the wished aspect.

Printing at home on a ink jet printer

The question of the choice of the printer regularly comes back on the forum. Know that every recent ink jet printer would fit. Even with down-market printers, the ink jet technology is greatly well tested and efficient.
What is important to look at when buying is the ink consommation, the cartridge price and if it’s easy to get them.
Furthermore, some options may be practical, like A3 size compatibility (to have only one stick point when you stick your boxes) and the combined scanner-printer (which will allow you to contribute to the site ;) )

Image

Advantages:
- Fast, you’re making your box at home !
Disadvantages:
- fragile by the time with the passing of time because sensible to the UV, wet fingers, etc.
- The stiffness fails to come up with expectations, foldings tend to round off with the passing of time.
- Ink cartridge’s consommation comes expensive in the long term
- The inside of the box would by white (but you can paste your printing on a mottled grey carton, see at the bottom).
Choosing your paper:
- Choose A4 size paper (or A3 size if printer compatible), at least 300 g/m2 thick to have a satisfactory stiffness.
- Bright or matt depending your tastes.
- 300g/m2 thick for A4 size paper is a widespread choice in shops.
- This kind of paper is available in every mall or e-market websites like Amazon.
- privilege a known brand, because with a retailer type paper, the rendering may be definitely worse.
- Topic to talk about the paper’s choice. (French)

2) Cutting the outline of your boxes

Once you’ve got your plates printed, the next step consists to cut the outline of each box.
To cut the long straight lines, use a stanley knife and a chopping board which can be found in creative hobbies shops.
For the shapes, like for exemple the strips, use small scissors and cut them slowly.
For the perfectionists, you can use a « round shape card punch » - Pas sûr de la traduction -, available in many creative hobbies shops. The shape of your stripes will be just perfect and the card punch will save you a precious time if you have a lot of boxes to make, think of it !

Image

Needed equipment
- a chopping board, to avoid cutting the table
- a good stanley knife
- small scissors, to cut carefully the shape.
- Optional : a « round shape card punch », for the speed and the better rendering.

3) The grooves to avoid craquelures while folding

After cutting the outline, it will be needed to fold again every side of the box.
A groove consists to apply a small pressure on the whole length of the carton, to « crush » and reduce the thickness of the paper at this place.
This way, folding will be easy and the ink won’t crack (or juste a little).

The economic technic

Use an empty ballpoint pen, a butter knife or any non sharp blade.
Plough your groove at the back of the printing.

Image

The professionnal choice

Using a creasing machine. This is a pretty expensive material so it depends on your budget and the number of boxes you intend to do.
Do it on the printed side.

Image

4) Sticking the pieces

If you print your box with two A4 size papers, you’ll have to stick two strips.
If you print by a professional in A3 size, you’ll have to stick only one strip. This is another argument to print your boxes by a professional !

Different possibilities
- double sided adhesive tape would be amply sufficient on the whole length of the strip. Practical, quick and relatively clean.
- Glue. Some members of the forum noticed that double sided adhesive tends to unstick with the passing of the time. This never happened to me, but using a good glue should resolve the problem.
- Topic to talk about the different kind of glue.

5) Bonus : Make or not make your own inner trays ?

Besides the boxes, you can download on the site the stencil plate to make your cartridge inner trays, and this for every gaming console.
A printing on thick paper, cut the full line and fold the dotted line and there it is.

Otherwise, rather than annoying yourself, there are many seller on eBay who offer inner trays easy to mount.
It will cost you around 1€ the inner tray, and prices are mostly on a sliding scale among the quantities.
Trying « SNES Trays », or « Gameboy Trays » on eBay is a good starting point.

Image

6) Durably protect your boxes and games

A game box is something fragile and you have to take care of !
Between solar aggressions, humid ambiant and the dust which inexorably settle on your beautiful shelves, it’s time to take care of your collection !
Also, we see more on more on Internet and Ebay protected games by beautiful plastic cases (named « Crystal », more classy).
It will cost you around 1€ the inner tray, and again prices are mostly on a sliding scale among the quantities.
Start by typing « Case Sleeves SNES » on eBay, and depending the stock of each seller, you may find other support (NES, Gameboy, etc.)
Generally, the cases comes flat, covered by a protective film (which protects the protecting case :D). You just have to take off the film and slip the game inside it to keep it sheltered. Once your game is in its beautiful case, you’ll be surprising yourself to feel something new in your hands.
Your collection will now take a new look, and then you wouldn’t be able to go back.
